For the next edition of Obsession, Sekan takes us through a deeply personal selection of records.

Some of the records in this session belonged to his father. Others came from his grandfather. Some he has spent years searching for himself.

Together they tell a story about where he comes from.

Growing up between cultures, music became one of the ways Sekan learned to understand his Indonesian roots. Over time it also became a way to understand family, migration, memory and belonging.

Many of these questions eventually led him to spend years researching Indonesian music and that of the diaspora, resulting in Soundwriters, his recently published book exploring the stories, records and histories that emerged between Indonesia and the Netherlands.

For this edition of Obsession, Sekan shares some of the music that shaped that journey. Records inherited, discovered, collected and passed on. Moving between soul, disco, jazz funk, rock and more.
